The 1959 Austin Mini Seven De Luxe is said by auctioneer Bonhams to be the eighth to roll of the Longbridge production line, three months before the car was officially launched.
It was estimated to fetch about £15,000 but the hammer fell at £40,250.
The Mini has just 30,041 miles on the clock, while the 848cc engine is said never to have been touched aside from a few maintenance checks. On top of the rust on the bodywork you can see the Farina grey paint, and the car also retains its original registration plate (XLL 27) and even the glass washer bottle. Bonhams reports that the driver's door has been replaced, but that the rest of the car is completely original.
The car was once owned by a Gladys Hobro of Aldwick in West Sussex before being bought by David Gallimore in 1986, who then kept it in his garage in Chichester until last year.
The Mini went on sale as part of a Bonhams auction of Collectors' Motor cars and Memorabilia at the Royal Air Force Museum in London on April 30.
